From Proto-West Germanic *ūr. This root survives in the modern English aurochs (though that word is a loan from German), hence its meaning.

From German ur-, from Middle High German ur-, from Old High German ur- (“out; without”), from Proto-West Germanic *uʀ-, from Proto-Germanic *uz- (“out”), from Proto-Indo-European *uds- (“up, out”), from Proto-Indo-European *úd (“upwards, away, out, outwards”). Doublet of a- and or-. Cognate also with Dutch oer- and Dutch oor-.
In English texts this prefix is usually (that is, more often than not) connected to the word it is attached to with a hyphen, in which case it is often also found written with a capital letter U. But in most cases all variants can be attested: ur-form, Ur-form, urform, Urform. However, ur-heimat would be unusual, since the term is borrowed from German, in which it is not hyphenated.

Ur (Sumerian: Urim; Sumerian Cuneiform: URIM2KI or URIM5KI; Akkadian: Uru) was an important city-state in ancient Sumer located at the site of modern Tell el-Muqayyar in Iraq's Dhi Qar Governorate. Once a coastal city near the mouth of the Euphrates on the Persian Gulf, Ur is now well inland, south of the Euphrates on its right bank, 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) from Nasiriyah.
