From puellus (“a little boy”), contracted from puerulus (“little boy, little slave”), the diminutive of puer (“boy”).
puella f (genitive puellae, masculine puellus); first declension
Puella masculīna can be translated as tomboy, and literally means "masculine girl" or "manly girl." See also the usage notes for virgo, which has some semantic overlaps with puella.
