用例

• This flower smells sweet. この花はいい香りがする.

• The room smelled damp. その部屋にはしめっぽい臭気が立ちこめていた.

b 〔+前置詞+(代)名詞〕〈ものが〉〔…のような〕においがする 〔like〕; 〔…の〕においがする 〔of〕.

用例

• It smells like violets. それはスミレのようなにおいがする.

• His breath smells (strongly) of tobacco. 彼の息は(ひどく)たばこくさい.

2 悪臭がある，ひどくにおう 《★進行形なし》.

用例

• The meat began to smell. 肉が臭くなってきた.

• His breath smells. 彼の息が臭い.

3 〔動詞(+at+(代)名詞)〕〔…の〕においをかぐ[かいでみる].

用例

• The dog smelled at his shoes. 犬は彼の靴のにおいをかいだ.

4 においがわかる，嗅覚がある.
