From Proto-Italic *supemos, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)úp-m̥mo-s, from *upó + *-m̥mo-. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *ufumô, Sanskrit उपम (upamá, “uppermost”). See also suprēmus and -issimus.
