• 原義は「離れて(別々に)運ぶ→互いに違ったものにする」。複数のものが、ある観点で比較して「異なる、違う」という意味で使う。「AがBと異なる」という場合は A differs from B、「AがBとCの点において異なる」という場合は A differs from B in Cと表現する。

用例

• Both the plasmon and phonon modes in a thin foil differ from those in the bulk material.
  薄膜の中でのプラズモンとフォノンのモード(様式)は、両方ともバルク試料の中でのモードと異なる。

• The quantitative interpretation of X-ray data from thin samples differs from the interpretation of similar data from thick samples in several ways.
