From 中期英語 thrice, thries (“three times, thrice; a third time; repeated three times”), from earlier thrī, thrīe (“three times, thrice; a third time”) (from 古期英語 þriwa, þreowa) + -es (suffix forming adverbs of time, place, and manner) (from 古期英語 -es (suffix forming adverbs)). The word is cognate with Old Frisian thria ("thrice"; > Saterland Frisian träie (“thrice”)), Middle Low German drîes (“thrice”), Middle High German drīes, drīs (“thrice”).

使用する際の注意点

• Unlike once and twice, thrice is somewhat dated in American and British usage, sometimes used for a comical or intentionally archaic effect; three times is the preferred and typical usage. On the other hand, once and twice are almost always preferred over one time and two times respectively. However, thrice does retain some currency in compounds such as thrice-monthly, and it is still preferred and stylistically neutral in Asian English dialects such as Indian English and Singapore English (where the counterpart three times is rare instead). In addition, even though thrice is somewhat dated, it still may be encountered in American and British usage.
