From 中期英語 sowrde, from Old French sourdre (“to rise”), that is, "to rise in flight, as a flock of birds", from Latin surgō. Related to surge.

Many authorities claim sord refers to mallards in flight or taking flight, but this is rarely followed in practice. Most uses in fact refer to mallards on water.
