From 中期英語 seely, sēlī, from 古期英語 liġ, ġesǣliġ (lucky, fortunate), from Proto-West Germanic *sālīg, from *sāli; equivalent to seel (happiness, bliss) +‎ -y. Doublet of Seelie.
