The lineis from a poemcommonlycalled the Goliardic “Confession” (writtenc. 1163). Even though it is attributed by Saintsbury to Walter Map (1130 – c. 1209 or 1210), it is now generally thought to be by an anonymous poet known as the Archpoet (c. 1130 – c. 1165).
