使用する際の注意点

In comparisons, and especially in the pattern "as/so much ~ as ~", we use "as much" for positive and negative statements, but "so much" only for negative statements. For example, "I have as much money as you", and "I don't have as/so much money as you", but not "I have so much money as you".

代名詞

as much

1. As determiner, above, but with the complement omitted and stated elsewhere or understood from context.

   There used to be a lot of sand on this beach, but now there isn't as much.

2. With the complement indicated with 'of'.

   I devote as much of my life as I can to my family.

3. That same thing (or something amounting to the same thing), referring to something previously mentioned.

   I think she's overweight, but when I said as much to her, she got very upset.

   I doubt you have any claim against the bank; it says as much in the terms and conditions.

使用する際の注意点

"as much of ~" is used when the complement involves a determiner (including article). For example, we say "as much of my life", not "as much my life".

      I like Katie a lot, but I don't like Hannah as much.

      It is as much your fault as mine.

   2. Used with a modifier to indicate a relative extent.

   I think she's overweight, but when I said as much to her, she got very upset.

   Spending on health is half again as much as last year.
