From 中期英語 *dot, dotte, from 古期英語 dott (“a dot, point”), from Proto-West Germanic *dott, from Proto-Germanic *duttaz (“wisp”). Cognate with Saterland Frisian Dot, Dotte (“a clump”), Dutch dot (“lump, knot, clod”), Low German Dutte (“a plug”), dialectal Swedish dott (“a little heap, bunch, clump”).
As a punctuation mark, dot is the standard term used when reading aloud the '.' element in an email address or URL. For reading decimal numbers, point is used. Version numbers of software are usually read with point (like decimals), but dot is also somewhat common. For the punctuation at the end of a sentence, period (US, Canada, Philippines) or full stop (Commonwealth) is used.
dot (third-person singular simple present dots, present participle dotting, simple past and past participle dotted)
From French dot.
