In response to the affirmation of the importance of Japan-U.S. cooperation through energy/environmental technologies at the first meeting between Prime Minister Aso and President Obama in February 2009, Minister Nikai of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, at the time of his official visit to the United States in May 2009, exchanged views with U.S. Secretary of Energy Chu on cooperation in the area of low carbon technologies, such as Smart Grid, energy saving buildings, photovoltaic energy and fuel cells.
