Learned borrowing from Latin pulvīnus (“cushion, pillow, bolster”). Doublet of pillow, polverine, pulvino, pulvillus, and pulvinulus, as well as others.

From the nominalization of earlier *polwiznos, with compensatory lengthening; by surface analysis, pulvis (“dust, powder”, oblique stem pulver-) + -nus (adjective-forming suffix), for the filler of a pillow.
