1 [形容詞・副詞の比較級を伴って]

a [比較の対象となる副詞節を導いて] …よりも《★【用法】 than に続く節では主節と共通する部分が略されることが多い》.

用例

He's taller than I (am). 彼は私よりも背が高い《★【用法】普通は He's taller than me. とするが, その時の than は前置詞 (⇒than 前置詞 1a)》.

Í like you better than hé (does). ぼくのほうが彼よりももっと君が好きだ《★【用法】 does は代動詞で likes you の意》.
I like yóu better than hím. ぼくは彼より君のほうが好きだ《★【用法】 than him は than I like him の I like が略された形; 前置詞 1 とは違う》.
She's no happier than (she was) before. 彼女は以前と同様ちっとも幸福でない.
Nothing would please me more than that my son should pass the entrance examination. 私にとって息子が入学試験に受かってくれることほどうれしいことはありません.
She works better alone than when she is with her sister. 彼女は姉と一緒にいる時よりも一人でいるほうがよく働く.
I'm wiser than to believe that. それを信じるようなばかではない.

b [関係代名詞的に用いて] …よりも《★【用法】目的語・主語・補語の役を兼ねもつ用法》.

用例

He offered more than could be expected. 彼は思いがけないほど多くの物を差し出した.

Her services are more valuable than was supposed. 彼女の尽力は想像していたより貴重なものである.

2 [rather，sooner などを伴って] …するより(むしろ), するくらいなら(いっそ).

用例

I would rather [sooner] die than disgrace myself. 恥をかくくらいなら死ぬほうがましだ.

I prefer to be called a fool rather than (to) fight. 戦うよりばかと言われるほうがよい.

3 a [other，otherwise，else などを伴って; しばしば否定文で] …よりほかの，…よりほかには.

用例

I have no other friends than you. 友人は君以外にない.

It was no [none] other than the king. だれあろうそれは王自身であった.
I could not do otherwise than run away. 逃げ出すしかほかにしようがなかった.

b [different，differently を伴って] 《米口語》 …とは(違った[て]).

用例

He took a different approach to it than I did. 彼は私とは違ったやり方でそれに取りかかった.

He solved the problem differently than I did. 彼は私と違った形でその問題を解いた.

4 [Scarcely [Hardly，Barely]+had+主語+ 過分の形で用いて] 《口語》＝when 《★no sooner…than の混同による誤用から》.

用例

Scarcely had I left than it began to rain. 出かけたとたんに雨が降りだした.

3 [関係代名詞 whom，which に先立って] 《文語》 …より.

用例

My husband, than whom nobody cooks better, will make supper. 私の夫が, だれよりも料理が上手なので, 夕食を作ります.
