語源
Uncertain. It may be dissimilated from an earlier form Proto-Italic *gnōr-, perhaps via an intermediary *grōr-. This pre-form may itself ultimately derive from Proto-Indo-European *ǵneh₃-. However, terms such as Latin gnārus did not experience the same sound development. To resolve this discrepancy, De Vaan suggests that gnārus had restored initial gn- on the model of ignōrō, but—since semantic shifts had rendered glōria synchronically unidentifiable with ignōrō—it did undergo the same remodeling. If the pre-form *gnōr- were accepted, then this term may itself derive from earlier Proto-Indo-European *ǵne/oh₃ri- (“knowledge”) (whence also possibly γνώριμος (gnṓrimos, “well-known, familiar”)) or *ǵnéh₃-s-, the same s-present whence ignōrō. For the dissimilation compare grōma from Ancient Greek γνῶμα (gnôma). Cognate with gnāvus, gnārus, ignōrō (with no dissimilation), nārrō, and also nōscō.
