Cognate with Old Saxon hēd (“condition, rank”), Old High German heit (“person, personality, sex, condition, quality, rank”), Old Norse heiðr ("honour, dignity") (whence Danish hæder (“honour”), Swedish heder (“honour”)), Gothic ������������ (haidus, “way, manner”).
