用例

• 商売は天気で違う
  The weather does make a difference in the business―does matter to the business―does signify in respect of business.

  The rain makes no difference in the house―does not matter to the house.
• （学校の席順などは）十年も絶つと違わぬ
  It will make no difference ten years hence.
• （兵は）訓練を受けると違う（受けないよりは好い）

（＝どこか違う）（There is） something peculiar （about a person or thing）

用例

• あの人は普通の人間とどこか違う（ところがある）
  There is something about him that distinguishes him from other men―There is something peculiar about him―（を略して）―There is something about him.

• 彼はどこも違ったところが無い
  There is nothing peculiar about him.
• あの先生はどこが違うとてあのようにもてはやされるのか
  What is there about that man, that he should be made so much of?

（＝わけが違う）（That is） another thing

用例

• そうなるとわけが違う
  That's another thing
  That alters the case.

• それとこれはわけが違う
  That is one thing; this is another thing.
• 英語を使うと教えるとはわけが違う
  To speak English is one thing; to teach it is quite another thing.
• 実行となるとわけが違う
  When you come to practise it, it is another thing―（しゃれて言うと）―another pair of shoes.
• あの人は口と腹と違う
  He says one thing and means another
  He does not mean what he says.

（＝物が違う）to be the wrong （person or thing）

用例

• （これじゃない）本が違う
  You have brought the wrong book.

• そりゃ汽車が違う
  I have taken the wrong train.
• （おかしいと思ったら）家が違う
  I have entered the wrong house.
• あわてて駆込んでみると家が違っていた
  I took the wrong house in a fit of absent-mindedness.
• （この人でない）人が違う
  You have brought the wrong man―（しゃれて言うと）―caught the wrong sow by the ear.
• 今度は人が違っていない（この人だ）
  You have brought the right man this time―caught the right sow by the ear at last.
• お門か違います
  You have come to the wrong shop―come to the wrong man.

• あの頃とは世の中が違う
  The times have changed since then.

• あの旅館は（代が変って）持主が違う
  The hotel has changed hands.

（＝似ぬ）to be unlike （anything）

用例

• 弟は僕と違って朝起きだ（僕のように朝寝坊でない）
  Unlike me, my brother is an early-riser
  He is not a late riser, like me.

• 月とスッポンほど違う
  They are as like as chalk and cheese.

（＝合わぬ）to disagree （with something）; to be at variance （with each other）

用例

• 皆の話が違う
  The accounts are at variance with one another―not at one with one another.

• 君の話は違うぜ
  What you say, is at variance with what others say
  The others do not say so.
• 品物が見本と違う
  The goods do not agree with the sample―fall short of the sample.

（＝間違う）to be mistaken; to be wrong; to be incorrect; to be erroneous; to do （anything） amiss ［注意］動詞に“mis-”を加えて表すことあり。

用例

• 君の言うことは違っている
  You are wrong.

• この時計は違っている
  The clock is wrong.

  The answer is wrong―incorrect.

  The spelling is wrong―The word is wrongly spelt―erroneously spelt―misspelt.
