From 中期英語 bounsen, bunsen (“to beat, thump”), cognate with Scots bunce, bonce (“to bounce”). Of uncertain origin. Perhaps imitative, related to bump, or related to 中期英語 bonchen (“to pound, beat”) and Dutch bonken (“to bump”).
