From 中期英語 choken (also cheken), from earlier acheken, from 古期英語 āċēocian (“to choke”), probably derived from 古期英語 ċēoce, ċēace (“jaw, cheek”), see cheek. Cognate with Icelandic kok (“throat”), koka (“to gulp”). See also achoke.
