From 中期英語 sesoun, seson (“time of the year”), from Old French seson, saison (“time of sowing, seeding”), from Latin satiō (“act of sowing, planting”) from satum, past participle of serō (“to sow, plant”) from Proto-Indo-European *seh₁- (“to sow, plant”). Akin to 古期英語 sāwan (“to sow”), sǣd (“seed”). Doublet of saison. Displaced native 中期英語 sele (“season”) (from 古期英語 sǣl (“season, time, occasion”)), 中期英語 tide (“season, time of year”) (from 古期英語 tīd (“time, period, yeartide, season”)).
In British English, a year-long group of episodes of a television or radio show is called a series, whereas in North American English the word series is a synonym of program or show.
