The embryo of a cedar (genus Cedrus) showing the radicle (r) (which eventually develops into the root system), hypocotyl (h), and cotyledons (c) (which develop into leaves). The gemmule (sense 2) or plumule, situated above the cotyledons, is the embryo’s growing point. (The endosperm (e) is a nutrient tissue surrounding the embryo.)

Borrowed from French gemmule, from Latin gemmula (“small bud; small gem”), from gemma (“bud of a plant; gem, jewel; thing made of precious stones”)^[1] (further etymology uncertain; possibly from Proto-Indo-European *ǵenh₁- (“to beget, give birth; to produce”), but see further at that entry) + -ula (feminine form of -ulus (diminutive suffix)).
