荷を降ろすという意味であるが,コンピュータでは,記憶装置の内容を外部装置,例えばプリンタ等に出力(印刷)すること.
例えば,コンピュータになんらかの障害が発生したときに,その状態を示すため,主記憶装置の内容を表示したり,プログラムの虫取りのためにプログラムの内容を表示することをいう.
ある時点における記憶装置の全体又は一部分の内容を,解析しやすい形式で記録したり表示したりする.
<例>ダンプ形式には,メモリ及び汎用レジスタのような内部記憶の内容,ディスク又は磁気テープのような外部記憶のデータに関する詳細な構造が含まれる.<備考>ダンプは,通常,デバッグの目的で行う

From Middle English dumpen, dompen, probably from Old Norse dumpa (“to thump”) (whence Danish dumpe (“to fall suddenly”)), of uncertain origin, possibly imitative of falling, similar to thump.
