2〔義務〕a(道理・道徳に照らして)…
b《should have done》…
3〔推量〕a(きっと)…
b《should have done》…
6〔用心〕((for fear, lest, in caseなどで始まる副詞節内で))…

成句should like ...

動詞:ask, advise, command, decide, demand, desire, direct, order, propose, recommend, requestなど
形容詞:advisable, crucial, desirable, important, necessary, urgent, vitalなど
名詞:advice, command, decision, demand, desire, direction, insistence, order, proposal, recommendation, request, requirement, suggestionなど
I suggested that he see the doctor.

From 中期英語 scholde, from 古期英語 sċolde, first and third person preterite form of sċulan (“should,” “have to,” “to owe”), the ancestor of English shall. By surface analysis, shall +‎ -ed. Cognate with German sollte, Gothic 𐍃𐌺𐌿𐌻𐌳𐌰 (skulda), Swedish skulle. Related to 中期英語 shild and shildy.

The loss of /l/ in this word is probably due to weak stress, as in would and could (though in the latter, the /l/ was due to the analogy of the former two).
