From 中期英語 around, arounde, from a- (from 古期英語 a- (“on, at”)) + 中期英語 round (“circle, round”) borrowed from French, equivalent to a- +‎ round. Cognate with Scots aroond, aroon (“around”). Displaced earlier 中期英語 umbe, embe (“around”) (from 古期英語 ymbe (“around”)).
