ほぼ全世界をカバーする巨大なコンピュータネットワークの集合体.1986年米国防総省高等研究計画局が構築したARPANETを起源とし,さらに1986年に全米5個所に設置されたスーパーコンピュータを相互接続したNFSnetがバックボーンになっていた.インターネットで利用できるサービスとしては,電子メール,ネットニュース,ファイル転送(FTP),リモートログイン(telnet)のほか,gopherやWWWがある.とくにWWWは最新のマルチメディア技術を取り入れ,動画や音声を利用できる新しい形の情報受発信メディアとして加速度的な成長を続けている.
TCP/IP(transmission control protocol/internet protocol)を採用して米国で実現された網間接続ネットワークを示す(固有名詞).
