The smallest unit of information handled by a computer. One bit expresses a 1 or a 0 in a binary numeral, or a true or false logical condition. A group of 8 bits makes up a byte, which can represent many types of information, such as a letter of the alphabet, a decimal digit, or other character.

1)コンピュータ内部での情報表現の最小単位で,2進数字のこと.1ビットでは“0"と“1"の2個の値が表わせ,2ビットでは“00",“01",“10",“11"の4個の値が表わせる.これは,10進数字では,“0",“1",“2",“3"にそれぞれ対応する.nビットでは2~n~個の値が表現できる.文字を表わすために,このbitを8個まとめた単位を一般にバイトという.記憶容量などはbit,あるいはbyteで表わされる.
2)「ビットがオンになる」とか「ビットをオンにセットする」というときは,そのビットの値が「1」にすることを意味する.
3)情報理論の分野では,2進数1桁の文字が保有できる最大情報量を表わし,シャノン(shannon)と同義語である.
2進記数法で用いられる0又は1のいずれかの数字.

情報の測度の単位.互いに排反な二つの事象から成る集合の,2を底とする対数として表された選択情報量に等しい.

Coined by John Tukey in 1946 as an abbreviation of binary digit, probably influenced by connotations of “small portion”.[1][2] First used in print 1948 by Claude Shannon.[3] Compare byte and nybble, with similar food associations.
