用例

This is not [isn't] a good book. これはよい本ではない. Don't be noisy. 騒ぐな. He will not [won't] come. 彼は来ないだろう. I haven't [I don't have] a house of my own. 私には家がない 《★【用法】 《米》 では一般に do を用いる》. You don't have to hurry. 急ぐ必要はない.

b [not が転移する場合] 《口語》 …でない.

I don't think he will come. 彼は来ないと思う 《★【比較】 I think he will not come. 従属節中の not が主節へ転移; 同類の動詞に believe, expect, imagine, suppose などがある》. She doesn't seem to like fish. 彼女は魚が好きではないようだ 《★【比較】 She seems not to like fish. 不定詞を否定する not が述語動詞を否定; 同類の動詞に appear, happen, intend, plan, want などがある》. 2 a [述語動詞・文以外の語句を否定して] …でなく 《★通例強勢がある》.

用例

I'm here not for sightseeing, but on business. 観光が目的ではなくて仕事でこちらに来ています. He's my nephew, (and) not my son. あれは私の甥(おい)で, 息子ではない 《★【変換】 He's not my son but my nephew. と書き換え可能》. “Was he a liar?"—“No, not a liar, just stupid." 「彼はうそつきだったの」「いや, うそつきじゃなかった, ただ愚かだっただけだよ」.

b [不定詞・分詞・動名詞の前に置いてそれを否定して] 〈…し〉ない.

3 [婉曲または控えめ表現で] …なくもなく.

5 [否定の文・動詞・節などの省略代用語として].

語源

From Middle English not, nat, variant of noght, naht (“not, nothing”), from 古期英語 *nōht, nāht (“nought, nothing”), short for nōwiht, nāwiht (“nothing”, 字義どおりに “no thing, no creature”), corresponding to nā (“no”) + wiht (“thing, creature”). Cognate with Scots nat, naucht (“not”), West Frisian net (“not”), Dutch niet (“not”), German nicht (“not”). Compare nought and aught. More at no, wight.

使用する際の注意点

In modern usage, the form do not ... (または don’t ...) is preferred to ... not for all but a short list of verbs (is/am/are/was/were, have/has/had, can/could, shall/should, will/would, may/might, need):

• They do not sow. (modern) vs. They sow not. (KJB)

American usage tends to prefer don’t have or haven’t got to have not or haven’t, except when have is used as an auxiliary (または in the idiom have-not):

• I don’t have a clue or I haven’t got a clue. (US)
• I haven’t a clue or I haven't got a clue. (outside US)
• I haven’t been to Spain. (universal)

The verb need is only directly negated when used as an auxiliary, and even this usage is rare in the US.

• You don’t need to trouble yourself. (US)
• You needn’t trouble yourself. (outside US)
• I don’t need any eggs today. (universal)

The verb dare can sometimes be directly negated.

Not! is a grammatical construction in the English language that became a sarcastic catchphrase in North America in the 1990s. A declarative statement is made, followed by a pause and then an emphatic "not!" is postfixed. The result is a negation of the original declarative statement. Popularized in North America in the 1990s by a Saturday Night Live skit and subsequent movie Wayne's World, it can be found earliest in print in an 1893 Princeton Tiger (March 30) 103: "An Historical Parallel-- Not." Most often used jocularly, but also used to express annoyance, it was such a popular catch phrase that it was selected as the 1992 Word of the Year by the American Dialect Society.
