2〔文脈的共有〕a(先行状況を共有して)その

b(特定可能であることを予期して)その

例えばthe earthやthe sunと言えば,常識的に「地球」「太陽」のことと理解するだろうという想定が働く.the moon, the universe, the world, the sky, the seaなども同様.またHow can I get to the post office? I was not able to use my car. The tires were slashed.

I was going to introduce to youがtheの使用を可能にしている

Look at the car across the street.
the02.jpg

the03.jpg

Wow, you got a new TV.(わあ,新しいテレビを買ったんだね)と言ったとする.
the04.jpg

語法aとtheplay the pianoとplay baseball
the05.jpg

①dogs
②the dog
③a dog
aにも総称を表す機能があり(⇒a~25),A dog is cute. またI like a dog.

b〔省略のある固有名詞〕/the Hilton (Hotel)ヒルトンホテル/the Shinano (River)信濃川/the Pacific (Ocean)太平洋/the Sahara (Desert)サハラ砂漠/the Treasure(米国の)財務省(the Department of Treasureの略形)
c〔修飾語を含む固有名詞〕〔海・半島・渓谷など〕/the Sea of Japan日本海/the Atlantic Ocean大西洋/the Korean Peninsula朝鮮半島/the Grand Canyonグランドキャニオン
〔船・公共建造物・鉄道・橋など〕/the Queen Elizabethクイーンエリザベス号/the White Houseホワイトハウス/the Tokaido Line東海道線/the Brooklyn Bridgeブルックリン橋/the Golden Gate Bridgeゴールデンゲートブリッジ,金門橋(Golden Gate Bridgeともいう)
〔官公庁・団体など〕/the Ministry of Education文部省/the World Bank世界銀行/the American Medical Associationアメリカ医師会
〔出来事〕/the Civil War(米国の)南北戦争/the Second World War第二次世界大戦(ただしthe Renaissance(ルネサンス)は修飾語を伴わないがtheを付ける)
〔新聞〕/the Washington Postワシントンポスト紙(修飾語を伴わなくてもthe Times(タイムズ紙),the Yomiuri(読売新聞)のようにtheを付ける)
d〔修飾語によって内容を特定して〕/the angry Bobおこりん坊のボブ(an angry Bobだと「(今)怒っているボブ」)/the late Prime Minister Yoshida故吉田首相
