5 [find oneself で]:

a 〔+目的語+補語〕〈自分が〉〈…の状態[場所]に〉いるのに気づく; 〈…であるのに〉気づく; (気がついてみると)〈…の場所[状態]に〉いる，ある.

用例

find oneself alone 自分が一人であるのに気づく. find oneself in a dilemma 自分が板ばさみになっているのに気づく. After walking two or three hours they found themselves in a small village. 2, 3時間歩いたのち彼らは小さな村に着いた. How do you find yourself today? 今日の気分はいかがですか.

b 〔+目的語+doing〕〈自分が〉〈…しているのに〉気づく; (気がついてみると)〈…して〉いる.

原義は「たまたま見つける→ある様子に気づく→発見する」。「見つける」、「(〜であることが)わかる」の一般的な動詞。「偶然に」、「探して」、「研究により」、「見つける(わかる)」という意味だけでなく、「なくしたものを見つける」という意味でも使う。科学技術論文では、「〜であることが分かる」というように使うことが多い。
